Coordinate plane basics

Coordinate plane basics

Practice this skill
Intuition

Understand first, compress later.

Geometry links shape, length, angle, area and space. Sketches make relationships visible.

Switch representations
The coordinate planeP(3, 2)
-4-2246-4-224xyx = 3y = 2
O
point Pdrop to the x-axis — reads xdrop to the y-axis — reads y
A point is always read in the order (x, y): first 3 across, then 2 up. That puts P in quadrant I. The quadrants are numbered I to IV anticlockwise from the origin O; in I both coordinates are positive, in III both are negative.
Formal view

You can coordinate plane basics when you can recognise the underlying objects, select valid rules and check each step for equivalence or logical implication.

Why does it work?

This skill sits on a prerequisite network. If a step is unstable, repair the missing prerequisite instead of merely doing more items of the same type.
