On the left the shape is cut perpendicular to the base; the triangle that comes off travels to the other end. Nothing is lost and nothing is added — so both figures have the same area. What is left on the right is a rectangle with the same measurements 6 and 4: A = b · h = 24. Note: the height is the perpendicular distance between the parallels, not the slanted side.
