Multivariable calculus basics

Practice this skill
Intuition

Understand first, compress later.

Calculus studies change and accumulation through limiting processes.

Switch representations
Slope fieldy′ = x − y

direction field (slope at each point)solution through (0, 1.8)further solutions
Each stroke shows the slope a solution would have to have at that exact spot — read straight off y′ = x − y. A solution curve is therefore nothing but a curve that runs along the strokes everywhere. The line y = x − 1 is itself a solution; every other curve settles onto it as x grows.
Formal view

You can multivariable calculus basics when you can recognise the underlying objects, select valid rules and check each step for equivalence or logical implication.

Why does it work?

This skill sits on a prerequisite network. If a step is unstable, repair the missing prerequisite instead of merely doing more items of the same type.
